SCC and McLean Focus on Healthy Relationships

The McLean Connection aided the outreach effort in February for National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month. Their articles entitled Forum at McLean High Promoting Healthy Relationships and Forum Examines Teen Dating Violence highlighted the SCC and local PTSA’s efforts to educate high school students on healthy relationships and prevent dating abuse. The Connection continued its efforts on this topic with their article: Spotlighting Teen Dating Violence. Educating and protecting our children is a year long venture.

Fairfax County Youth Survey

The 2010 Fairfax County Youth Survey is now available. The survey examines the behaviors, experiences, and risk and protective factors that influence the well-being of our county’s youth. It is a comprehensive, anonymous and voluntary survey given to students in the 6, 8, 10 and 12 grades, and it asks questions covering topics including: alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; bullying and cyberbullying: physical and mental health; extracurricular and civic engagement. We encourage everyone to review this important information at the following link: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm. Along with the general findings, information regarding the responses specifically from students in the McLean and Langley school pyramids will be released in 2012. Review the highlights of the Youth Survey in McLean Connection’s three-part series on the subject: Risky Behavior By The Numbers, County Takes Aim At Bullying, and County Aims to Prevent Substance Use and Abuse.

The Fairfax County teens who were least likely to drink or engage in other risky behaviors had at least three of the following assets: High Personal Integrity, Perform Community Service, Teachers Recognize Good Work, Have Community Adults to Talk to, Participate in Extracurricular Activities, or Parents are Available for Help.
