Fairfax County Youth Survey

The 2010 Fairfax County Youth Survey is now available. The survey examines the behaviors, experiences, and risk and protective factors that influence the well-being of our county’s youth. It is a comprehensive, anonymous and voluntary survey given to students in the 6, 8, 10 and 12 grades, and it asks questions covering topics including: alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; bullying and cyberbullying: physical and mental health; extracurricular and civic engagement. We encourage everyone to review this important information at the following link: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm. Along with the general findings, information regarding the responses specifically from students in the McLean and Langley school pyramids will be released in 2012.

The Fairfax County teens who were least likely to drink or engage in other risky behaviors had at least three of the following assets: High Personal Integrity, Perform Community Service, Teachers Recognize Good Work, Have Community Adults to Talk to, Participate in Extracurricular Activities, or Parents are Available for Help. Check out the Teenage Alcohol Use Fact Sheet” to learn more about underage alcohol use in Fairfax County and what you can do to help your teen make good decisions about drinking and other risky behavior.

Sixth Grade Ethics Day

Sixth Grade Ethics Day will commence this year on February 16, 22,23 and 29. All McLean public schools and The Langley School will participate in a large group discussion with Ron Axelrod on the foundations of sound decision making. They will then split into small group discussions on ethical issues facing today’s youth. We look forward to seeing your children at this event. Contact your local elementary school to volunteer as a table leader.

Middle School Forum

The Youth Advisory Council, comprised of 9th to 12th graders from the McLean public and private schools, has been training this winter for their presentations at Longfellow and Cooper Middle Schools on the transition to high school life. Longfellow will host the event on February 24 and Cooper will receive the YAC students on March 22. This is an important 8th grade program in that it relieves stress associated with entering high school and gives 8th grade students the opportunity to ask questions of upperclass students and receive information about the realities of high school life.
