Programs & Services
The SCC provides programs and activities that are designed to foster a positive environment and healthy dialogue for and with our young people. Some of these are core activities that recur every year and others are ad hoc activities that our members suggest.
Core Activities
6th Grade Ethics Day
This program involves all 6th graders in the McLean and Langley school pyramids. Its purpose is to teach the kids how to make ethical decisions in all aspects of their lives: socially, academically, and within their own families. The students first meet as a large group where they are led by a facilitator in an understanding of how to make ethical decisions, and they are then broken up into smaller groups led by parent volunteers to discuss various ethical issues and how to solve them.
Youth Advisory Council
Teens attending one of the public or private high schools within the McLean and Langley Cluster 1 pyramids (i.e., Langley High School, Mclean High School, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Potomac School, Madeira School or Oakcrest School), are invited to join our Youth Advisory Council (YAC). YAC teens provide peer-to-peer mentoring for community youth and work with community leaders to facilitate change and promote an environment where young people are healthy, safe, and free from alcohol and drug use.
Middle School Forum
In the spring, members of the Youth Advisory Council go to Longfellow and Cooper Middle Schools to meet with 8th graders and give them a glimpse of what high school is like. This information session is split into 2 parts: a large panel discussion and a small group discussion with YAC members leading both of these discussions.
Project Sticker Shock
In advance of the prom and graduation season, the SCC coordinates a program where teens, along with adult chaperones, go to local stores that sell multi-packs of beer and wine coolers to place stickers on these products. These stickers warn adults of the consequences of purchasing alcohol for underage drinkers.
Prom Notes
This is a program where we ask 5th and 6th grade students to write notes for juniors and seniors attending prom, advising the older students that they are role models for the younger students, and asking them to please make responsible decisions on prom night regarding alcohol and drug use. These notes are then placed on tables at McLean and Langley proms for attendees to read.
Prescription Medicine Collection
In conjunction with McLean Day and lending assistance to the nationwide effort to encourage safe disposal of prescription medicine, community residents are encouraged to drop off their unused and expired medications at a designated site.
Mental Health Professionals Network Event
This event is held every other year and gives local mental health professionals and school psychologists/counselors an opportunity to meet with one another and discuss their areas of specialty.
Community Meetings
Throughout the year, the SCC holds community meetings to provide information to parents on various topics/issues.
Community Outreach
SCC promotes, participates in or sponsors other programs in the McLean community. We are present at all middle and high school Back To School Nights, sponsor McLean and Langley High School Ethics Days, participate in WinterFest Parade, attend the Great Falls Spring Festival and McLean Day, and sponsor the All Night Graduation Party at McLean High School. Our strong commitment to the youth in our community extends our reach into other organizations and events. Inform us of your community events or submit a Community Funding Application so that we can assist you in your endeavors.
